 Quarry Visit & Essay Competition Winners 2004 Annouced - 02/06/2004

Over the past number of years the IMQS has run a quarry visit and essay writing competition aimed at local schools throughout the country. This years winners are announced.
 Details
Participating quarries held organised visits where the pupils saw for themselves the processes involved in producing the range of extractive materials, so familiar to them in their everyday environment, whilst appreciating the controls in place to reduce the impact of quarrying activities on the surrounding area. The Students then wrote essays concentrating on the impacts and benefits of that quarry.

The 2004 National Winner was:-

Ciaran Hennelly from Ballinrobe Community School, Co Mayo – click to download his winning entry, who visited McGraths Quarry in Cong.

Regional winners were:-

Ruth Murphy, Presentation College Headford, Co Galway (who also visited McGrath’s) - download

Colm Morris, Gorey Community School (who visited Casey Enterprise, Gorey) - download available shortley

Nicola Cleary, Columba Collage, Kilucan, Co. Westmeath (who visited Lagan Cement Factory, Kinnegad) - download available shortley

IMQS Council also gave a Special Merit Award to Conal Byrne of Ballinrobe Community School for an outstanding essay - download

The contribution of the participating Schools and Quarries associated with the winners has also been recognised and their efforts acknowledged by the IMQS.
