4. Membership

 4.1

The Society shall consist of Honorary Fellows, Fellows, (Ordinary) Members, Student Members and Corporate Members. The foregoing classes of Fellows and Members are herein referred to as Members.

 4.2

Honorary Fellows shall be persons who, in the unanimous opinion of the Council, have distinguished themselves by their scientific, technical, or administrative activities in the natural resources and extractive industries, or who have made important contributions to the advancement of the natural resources and extractive industries and/or the Society. Honorary Fellows shall have all the rights and privileges of Members. They shall not be required to pay annual subscriptions.

 4.3

Fellows are Members in good standing of the Society who have reached the age of 35 years, and who meet one of the following criteria:

a. Hold a degree or diploma and have seven years' experience in the natural resources or associated industries
b. Have ten years' continued direct involvement at senior level in the natural resources industry
c. Have made a significant contribution to the Irish Mining and Quarrying Society and/or to the Irish natural resources industry (significant contribution must be presented by the applicant for acceptance by the Council).

Fellows of the Society who have been elected by the Council, who have paid their annual dues, and who remain in good standing are entitled to put the letters FIMQS after their name.

 4.4

(Ordinary) Members shall be persons in the natural resources and extractive industries and in allied and associated industries, or in the provision of services to the natural resources and extractive industries, or in education with reference to the natural resources who meet one of the following criteria:

a. hold a degree or recognised diploma in geology, mineral engineering or other studies related to the natural resources industry
b. own an active mining, quarrying and associated natural resources industry operations
c. are actively involved in, or retired from, mining, quarrying or natural resources and extractive industry operations.
d. are engaged in the supply of recognised mining and quarrying equipment and supplies, as approved by the Society's Council.

All applicants for membership must be proposed and seconded by Members in good standing of the Society. Each candidate will be elected by securing the votes of at least two thirds of the Councillors present at the appropriate Council meeting.

 4.5

Student Members shall be persons engaged in study or training, directed towards employment in the natural resources or extractive industries. They shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges of members, except that they shall not have the right to nominate candidates or to vote in election to Council, or to hold office as an Officer of the Society.

 4.6

Corporate Members shall be firms, companies or other corporate bodies involved in the natural resources and extractive industries, or in allied or associated industries, or in the provision of services to the natural resources and extractive industries.

Corporate members shall have all the rights and privileges of Members, including the right to a single vote, but shall not be entitled to election as an Officer of the Society or to nominate candidates for election to Council. In the event that a Corporate Member exercises the right to a vote in any of the business of the Society, such vote shall be exercised by a person nominated by the Corporate Member to so vote.

Such nominations shall be notified, in writing, to the Secretary of the Society at least seven days in advance of any exercise of voting rights. The Directors of Corporate Members bodies shall automatically be Ordinary Members of the Society.
