Alan graduated from Camborne School of Mines with a BEng (Hons) in Mining Engineering. He currently holds the position of Drill and Blast Engineer in the Production Department of Boliden Tara Mines.

He is President of the IMQS (Irish Mining and Quarrying Society) and represents Ireland on the Council of EFEE (European Federation of Explosives Engineers).
